The Chevrolet Bolt is an excellent example of the strengths of an electric vehicle platform. It’s quick and quiet and, of course, it creates no air pollution as it cruises along. What’s more, the Bolt has surprising interior space for a vehicle that looks small from the outside. And for the 2020 model year, Chevrolet updated the Bolt’s battery pack, increasing its capacity without changing its size. The result is an increase in the total range to an impressive 259 miles.

So, that’s good news. But there are a few things we wish Chevy would have addressed for 2020 but didn’t. The touchscreen can be a little slow to respond to your inputs, and the cabin has a low-rent look and feel to it. Front-seat comfort is also lacking. We do like the high-definition cameras that Chevy added to 2020 models, but there is still no adaptive cruise control available.

3. Jaguar I-PACE

 

The recent release of Jaguar’s brand new electric ‘I-PACE’ model has taken the industry by storm. It’s being hyped as the best of a new breed of uncompromising electric vehicles that not only takes on its fossil fuel predecessor but outperforms it.

One of the first electric SUVs, it not only trumps the original F-PACE which it supersedes, but it’s also in strong competition with Tesla’s Model X (also a stand-out electric SUV). The I-PACE is hands down the strongest Tesla alternative on the market. Jaguar’s new I-PACE electric is taking on the Tesla Model X.

But considering the car’s luxury feel, spacious interior, and futuristic additional features (there’s a setting that allows you to replace the absence of engine noise) we feel comments like this are well deserved. Not only that, but it has a top speed of 125 mph. It’s no slouch.

4. Tesla Model 3

 

Model 3 is one of the best electric cars in the world. It was the electric car many had been waiting for. It’s a compact executive saloon rivaling the likes of the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series – a market with broad mainstream appeal – and it’s also one of the most convincing electric cars that money can buy.

It combines minimalist style, space-age technology, grin-inducing performance, cutting-edge charging tech – supported by the expansive and dedicated Tesla Supercharger network – and, most importantly, a long driving range. The entry-level Standard Range Plus model claims up to 267 miles on a single charge, but it doesn’t sacrifice performance to achieve this. The electric motor drives the rear wheels and powers the car from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds, while top speed is 140mph.

5. Volkswagen ID.3

 

The last one I would like to recommend is Volkswagen ID.3. This car goes on sale in the UK next year with the mid-size 58kWh battery. There will be a smaller 45kWh battery offering 205 miles and a larger 77kWh one offering 342 miles to follow. The significance of the ID.3 is that it has been built as an electric car from the start, meaning that the architecture has been designed to accommodate the powertrain while leaving space for passengers. We’re talking 310Nm of instant torque, which sounds good for an urban hatch. A high-output wall box is available for customers with a choice of two power levels.
